Serbia under media hypnosis

Belgrade, May 8, 2011. (Blic) - Miroljub Radojkovic, reputable professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences and a former member of RBA Council, says that Serbian media have failed to go through professional transformation after 2000 as they have shared the fate of weak economy and suffered the consequences of the lack of adequate legal framework.

"After the fall of Milosevic, journalists were unable to deal with absolute freedom and absolute chaos on the market, where pirate media have participated, too. Without ideological monopoly, social and political engagement, a competent ministry and legal solutions, the market was occupied by commercial media predators, which directly influenced the formation of public opinion that had become subject to manipulation and political influences. In accordance with the European standards, the media sector has fallen under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture. The registry of media was introduces back in 2009  and according to it, there are 1034 media outlets in Serbia, namely more than the economy of countries such as Germany, France, Sweden could bear", Radojkovic said.

He also pointed out that the competent ministry claimed all solutions important for the media would be defined in the media strategy, the document that was drafted without the public debate and whose presentation was planned 18 months ago.
