ESSENTIALLY – GOOD

The Association of Media on the Draft Media Strategy

Belgrade, June 18, 2011 (Dnevnik) - The Managing Board of the Association of Media concluded that the Draft Media Strategy was "good in its essence", but that it was possible to significantly improve some parts of the document, especially in the field of transparency of ownership and protection of competition.

"The proposed solutions must not limit the development of the media industry. Hence, the Managing Board of the Association decided to submit to the Ministry, within the framework of public debate, the concrete proposals for regulating these issues in order to prevent imprecise and arbitrary interpretations", it is said in the statement.

The Managing Board of the Association of Media, whose representatives were among the members of the working group for drafting the Media Strategy, said that it advocated for complete transparency of the ownership structure of media and consistent protection of competition. It was said that the Draft Strategy considerably reflected the Association's stands, especially in the part related to the local media, necessity of changing and harmonizing media legislative and stimulating measures to support print media etc. According to the statement, a member of the Association of Media, Tanjug Agency, has retained the right to inform in detail the Ministry of Culture, Media and Information Society on its opinion on the proposals given in the Draft Strategy.
