WORLD MEDIA FREEDOM DAY
BELGRADE, May 7, 2002 - Reporters Without Frontiers marked today's World Day of Media Freedom with their annual report which applauded Serbia for positive changes in media freedom. At the same time, the organisation emphasised the failure to introduce new media legislation and transform the state media organisations. Reporters Without Frontiers also noted that the murder journalists Milan Pantic (last year) and Slavko Curuvija (in 1999) have still not been solved. The report also noted numerous cases of threats and legal action against Serbian journalists and the problems facing independent electronic media because of their unequal treatment in comparison to state and private commercial stations which have retained the privileges they enjoyed under the Milsoevic regime.
