MULTIPLE SUITS AGAINST NEZAVISNA SVETLOST

KRAGUJEVAC, June 7, 2002 – Journalists from the Kragujevac weekly Nezavisna svetlost are being repeatedly sued for libel and appeared in court twenty times in February this year alone, the paper reports. Most of the charges have been laid over articles “which reveal negative phenomena in society in an analytical and critical manner, as well as suspected abuses of authority”. “So then we have a situation in which a journalist is sued fro writing an article on economic crime for which he relied on information from criminal records,” reports the paper. The charges have been laid by prominent figures in the local community.
