ANEM Stations Strike in Support of Montenegrin Media

BELGRADE, August 8, 2002 - Independent radio and television stations in the ANEM network will interrupt their programming at noon today in support of Montenegrin media. The Association of Montenegrin Independent Broadcasters yesterday announced a half-hour withdrawal of programming today in protest at legislation passed in the parliament of the southern republic this week and subsequently proclaimed by President Milo Djukanovic. This legislation interferes with the free functioning of media in Montenegro and also fails to conform to the standards set by the Council of Europe. The clear aim of this legislation is to manipulate public opinion by controlling and directing the work of journalists and media.
