Protest over Journalist Arrest

BELGRADE, November 13, 2002 – The Independent Association of Serbian Journalists has issued a protest over the detention of members Zelimir Markovic. The Association claims that police from Cukarica yesterday took Markovic from his apartment, threatening to use force against him and holding him in custody for five hours without explanation. The journalists learnt at 10.00 a.m. in the Second Municipal Court that he had been arrested for not appearing in court a year and a half earlier to face charges arising from an article published in the magazine Duga. The Association claimed that Markovic had never received the original summons.
