SEEMO: Little Improvement In Media Freedom

VIENNA, February 3, 2003 - The South-Eastern Europe Media Organisation last year recorded 422 cases of violations of media freedom in the region. The largest single number recorded in a country was 64 for Serbia. Montenegro came well down the list with only 24 violations. The organisation, which is a member of the International Press Institute, recorded threats, physical assaults, criminal charges and other legal proceedings, problems with criminals, armies, secret services and bureaucrats, problems with customs and immigration officials, conflicts with media proprietors and political pressure.
