Revision of the Information Act proposed

BELGRADE, 11 June, 2003 – Eighteen representatives of the most influential local media and professional organisations in Serbia have written a joint letter to the Serbian Government evaluating the current state of the media and recommending the urgent adoption of legislation pertaining to access to information. The senior directors and editors also said that the Serbian Government should once again assess the sustainability of some provisions of the Information act, which were not agreed with the working group, and should also propose that the parliament abolish disputed provisions by submitting a draft law. The disputed provisions concern the ban on the distribution of media and the state’s right to form a news agency.
