Korac: Slanderous claims are part of politics

BELGRADE, June 30, 2003 – Deputy Serbian Prime Minister Zarko Korac has reponded to the recent spate of libel charges filed by Communications Bureau chief Vladimir Popovic, insisting that "people occupying public posts should avoid suing journalists because slander is a risk of political involvement". Noting that the lawsuite were filed privately by Popovic, Korac said: "It is a fact that some media are turning him into the leading political figure in Serbia, which doesn’t correspond with the realty. "Many politicians trying to curry favour with the media by attacking Popovic actually share his opinion or even think worse of these media”.
