NIN claims victory in spindoctor lawsuit

BELGRADE, December 5, 2003 - A Belgrade court has thrown out a lawsuit brought by the Serbian government's former spindoctor, Vladimir "Beba" Popovic, against Belgrade weekly NIN. First Municipal Court judge Gordana Komnenic said that all public figures must expect to endure criticism in the media, and noted that Popovic could have denied NIN's claims at a press conference. Popovic, who was responsible for a flurry of lawsuits against Serbian journalists, had sought two million dinars (approx. 30,000 euros) in compensation over two texts entitled "Refreshed Marathon Man" and "Beba is not to blame".
