Tijanic Appointed RTS Director, Board Resigns

BELGRADE, March 19, 2004 – The Serbian government has appointed Aleksandar Tijanic as general-director of Radio Television Serbia. The RTS management board has resigned over the appointment. Former chairman Dejan Mijac said the government had acted wrongly in appointing Tijanic, and said the move violated the RTS Statute. “One of the first acts of the management board was to launch a public competition in which Aleksandar Crkvenjakov was appointed RTS general director. The least we expected was for this procedure to be repeated by the new government, if not in cooperation with this management board then certainly in cooperation with the new one appointed by the government following our dismissal,” he told B92, adding: “Aleksandar Tijanic’s appointment may not be in breach of the Law on Public Companies, but it certainly goes against the RTS Statute that we have tried to defend from the very start of our mandate. Namely, under the RTS Statute, the RTS general director must have been through higher education.”
