Newspaper sues MP

NOVI SAD, May 1, 2004 – Novi Sad daily Gradjanski list has filed private charges of insult and libel against a member of the Serbian Parliament. The complaint relates to intemperate criticism of the paper Radical Party MP Mircic at a press conference in February this year. Gradjanski list is seeking damages of 300,000 dinars (about 4,200 euros) for each of its journalists and 500,000 dinars (about 7.000 euros) for its director as compensation for mental anguish and loss of reputation. The paper claims that Mircic described it as “a fascist, pro-Croat paper” and as the paper “for which all the bastard journalists work,” adding that was “financed and owned by Stipe Mesic,” and “under the patronage of Nenad Canak and the control of Zika Berisavljevic”.
