RESISTANCE TO PRIVATISATION IN SERBIA

BELGRADE, June 1, 2006 (FoNet) - Goran Cetinić said that there is a great resistance in Serbia against media privatisation. Cetinić is the American non-governmental organisation IREX’s economic advisor. “Getting the state out of media ownership is a norm of civilisation and IREX is trying to increase the speed of the privatisation process with constructive actions.” Cetinić said. He added that the misuse of ownership in media and the financing of the media with money garnered from taxation leads to the disrespect of media independence and puts constant pressure on format changes and the editorial staff. “That is why getting the state out of media ownership is one of the priorities, and there are not many countries left in which the state owns the media.” Cetinić said.
