Government Names New RTS Administrative Board

The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) is concerned at the fact the Serbian Government yesterday appointed a new Administrative Board of Radio Television Serbia by applying regulations under the Law on Public Companies rather than those of the Broadcast Act, which do not allow for the transformation of the state broadcaster into a public service. ANEM, however, welcomes a government statement in which it specified that the new members of the Administrative Board would only hold the posts until the election of a new Broadcast Council. This makes clear that the current appointments are only temporary.

ANEM demands that the Serbian Government moves quickly to address the violations of the law in the election of certain members of the Council, in order for this body to finally begin carrying its mandate, which includes naming the Administrative Board of the transformed RTS.

Only through a legal solution to the problems of the election of the Broadcast Council will the government demonstrate an honest intention to see through the transformation of RTS from a state broadcaster to a public service for all citizens.

Slobodan Stojsic,
Chairman of ANEM Managing Board
