UNS: PRESIDENT TADIC's Hasty assessment OF THE SITUATION IN THE MEDIA

Belgrade, April 08, 2011 (Danas) - The Journalists Association of Serbia (UNS) stated  yesterday that the penalty imposed on the "Danas" daily was a result of incorrect implementation of the Public Information Law adopted in spring 2003, and that the part of  the law related to joint and several liability had been wrongly applied.

As it was said in the statement, UNS was very concerned about the fact that the Serbian president was not familiar with the dramatic position of Serbian journalists and dangers they faced.

UNS stated that judging from the interview with Boris Tadic, "it is clear that the President of the Republic believes that anti-European media law that he expressly signed on August 31, 2009, is still in force". A major part of this law was declared unconstitutional in July last year, by which its draconian penalties were superseded. Even while it had been in force, the Law had not been implemented ", UNS stated.

UNS warned that solving the problems in the media sector, which President Boris Tadic called "a very sensitive area", required much more serious monitoring, a greater commitment and responsibility of the authorities.
