03. 05. 2014 (Beta, Novi magazin, By M. J.) On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day the Government of the Republic of Serbia said that it will strive for the respect of media freedom and media pluralism.

Freedom of expression is one of the essential foundations of a democratic society. It can be achieved only in a free media environment, and this is why the new Government of the Republic of Serbia will strive for the respect the freedom and pluralism of media, it is said in a statement released by the Government Office for Cooperation with the Media.

"Our goal is to create a positive legal environment that respects the role of media in the society, and for this reason we are working on three key media laws and on the strategy, the adoption and implementation of which should significantly improve the independence of media, along with steady funding of public service television broadcasters, and the withdrawal of the state from media ownership," stressed the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić.

As he pointed out, Serbia's strategic goal is EU membership, and the freedom of expression is one of the essential foundations of the European Union.
