NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF SERBIA HAS BEEN OFFERED A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF RELEVANT EXPERTISE WHEN RECONSIDERING AMENDMENTS TO THE BROADCASTING LAW

The fact that the text amending the Broadcasting Law, adopted by the Serbian National Assembly on 19 July 2006, has not been signed by the President of Serbia, should be seen by lawmakers as an opportunity to give due consideration to proposals made by other relevant state bodies, as well as by various experts and organisations, when they examine anew possible amendments to the Broadcasting Law. The amendments to the Broadcasting Law were fast-tracked under urgent procedure rules, without prior public debate and disregarding concern expressed by other state bodies and by experts. As the OSCE Mission to Serbia, the Council of Europe attaches great importance to the regulation of Serbia’s broadcasting sector; its development should comply with Council of Europe standards, which Serbia, as a member of the Organisation, has accepted.
