Mirković: Four independent candidates in REM are heroically fighting to contribute to the election of the president and the constitution of the Council.

A representative of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), Saša Mirković, stated today to FoNet that four independent candidates in the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) are "heroically" fighting and trying to contribute to the election of the president and the constitution of the Council of that body through a constructive approach, while on the other hand, he does not see goodwill.

“Insisting on a candidate who, we know, has slipped through the eye of a needle, considering their biography, conflict of interest, and so on – sends a very clear message that the authorities are not ready to elect a president from among independent candidates, which is surprising to me,” said Mirković.

He stated that he thought the president would first be elected, and only then would there be a blockage with four votes on one side and four votes on the other.

Mirković believes that the election of representatives of the National Council of National Minorities will not unblock the current situation for the simple reason that the sixth vote will still be missing for key decisions, in the polarization that is spilling over from the socio-political scene into the REM Council.

“In other words, it is evident that the authorities do not wish to establish the REM Council, especially not to start working before the elections. These are just attempts to demonstrate that something is being done, that there is good will, but essentially, there is no political will, just as there hasn't been for the past two years, during which the authorities obstructed the election of members of the REM Council,” he added.

Mirković emphasized that all of this has resulted in a “complete chaos” in the media landscape, where there is unpunished behavior from actors and “media” that should be sanctioned on multiple grounds and that already, due to their actions, if nothing else, should be temporarily removed from the air until they change their editorial concept and begin to comply with the Law on Electronic Media.

The third constitutive session of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) is scheduled for tomorrow at nine o'clock, and the agenda for the session, which is open to the public, has not been specified.

At the previous two constitutive sessions, on July 20 and July 30, the president of the REM Council was not elected, as neither of the two proposed candidates – Miloš Garić nor Dubravka Valić Nedeljković – received the necessary majority of six votes.

The constitutive session is chaired by the oldest member of the Council, Dubravka Valić Nedeljković.

In addition to Dubravka Valić Nedeljković, the members of the Council are Miloš Garić, Stevica Smederevac, Milan Petković, Snežana Miljković, Ira Prodanov Krajišnik, Mileva Malešić, and Rodoljub Šabić.
