Organized by the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), a three-day training on journalist safety in the newsroom of the Danas newspaper and portal has concluded today.

The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Serbia, Andreas von Bekerat, stated today, after a meeting with several media associations in Serbia, that the media play a crucial role in the public interest and must have a secure and supportive environment.

The process of project co-financing for media content in Novi Pazar is non-transparent, influenced by politics, and unfair, as every year more than 70 percent of the funds are allocated to a single media outlet – Radio-Television Novi Pazar, according to representatives of local media from that city.

The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) organized a meeting today with representatives of local media in Novi Pazar. The President of the ANEM Board, Veran Matić, spoke with about twenty journalists from various local editorial offices and representatives of the non-governmental sector regarding the security situation of the media in that city.

The position of media and journalists in Serbia is best illustrated by two media outlets from the south - the Regional Information Agency JUGpress, a civil society media that the citizens of Leskovac and southern Serbia perceive as their public service, which for years has published content in Albanian, Roma, and Bulgarian languages, and Nova Naša reč from Leskovac (the only printed media south of Niš), located in premises that were the cheapest – those of the SUBNOR, the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War.

In the competitions for project co-financing of media projects in Vranje and other cities and municipalities in southern Serbia, the quality of content does not determine which media will receive funding, but rather a "corrupt system that evaluates projects," believes the majority of representatives from local media in Vranje, Surdulica, and Bujanovac.

Veran Matić, a member of the Permanent Working Group for the Safety of Journalists and Chairman of the ANEM Board, visited the newsroom shared by the Regional Information Agency JUGpress and the weekly publication Nova Naša reč, and spoke with journalists about the struggle for the survival of these media outlets.

The President of the ANEM Board, Veran Matić, spoke with more than 10 journalists from various local editorial offices about the security situation for media representatives in the city.

The representative of ANEM, Saša Mirković, participated as a speaker at the meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) held on July 16 in Vienna.
