In anticipation of the official start of the election campaign, Novi Sad Television has received a new studio.

It was eagerly welcomed, and the new season was promoted – by none other than local officials.

While the President of the City Assembly of Novi Sad presents the television editors with a framed photo of the highest officials of the ruling party, the mayor received – his own show.

"Well, Mayor... an hour and a half."

"Yes, we did go a bit over compared to last time."

"Next time it will be two hours."

Two hours of conversation with citizens, as well as presenting a plan on how Mićin will solve their problems.

"'Ask the Mayor,' which is again a sort of campaign, because in the middle of an election campaign you bring in an official and give them either informative or complimentary questions for the city government," says journalist Dragana Prica Kovačević.

A lot of citizens' money, not just from Novi Sad residents, has been invested in Novi Sad TV: Prica came to this conclusion by reviewing data on project co-financing.

"Over 30 million, if we count from all municipalities in Vojvodina, from the Ministry, the Province, and of course from Novi Sad. There are some municipalities, like Čoka, a small municipality in Banat, which has given more than 200 thousand to Novi Sad Television – which is a local television station in Novi Sad," she states.

She obtained all the data from ANEM's database on project financing.

"The companies owned by Goran Lalić, 'Srbija Danas', the owner of Novi Sad TV and the daily newspaper. They have earned over 100 million from media competitions. The media of Vladan Stefanović from Subotica, a total of 66 million. Also, the media from the group of Zdravko Stepović, even 30 media outlets associated with his name – and so far they have been supported with nearly 48 million dinars," says Saša Mirković from ANEM.

What do all these media outlets have in common?

"First, these media have no reputation, and most of them do not adhere to the professional code. During the term of the previous minister Dejan Ristić and the current Bratina, project co-financing has experienced its toughest moments and is in a state of clinical death," says Mirković.

And while millions of public funds finance media that insult regime opponents and turn the election campaign into series on their networks, professional journalism is left with crumbs.

Or, increasingly – nothing.
