ANEM alarm: Criminal complaint due to threats against Magločistač.

The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) strongly condemns the threats directed at the editorial office of the Magločistač portal from Subotica, which has led to a criminal complaint for the offense of endangering safety being filed with the Prosecutor's Office for High-Tech Crime against the individual who sent the threatening message.

ANEM alarm: Criminal complaint due to threats against Magločistač.

The message contains a threat to attack the life and body of editorial members or their close ones with the words: “I will slaughter your children with their eyes gouged out, you and Magločistač.”

“This is not the first time; we have received two previous death threats. One was at the end of 2017, also sent via the internet: ‘I will f*** your mothers, you’re messing with an honest man, WE WILL SLAUGHTER YOU LIKE NAKED RABBITS, YOU SUBOTICA SCUM,’ and the other at the end of January this year, which stated: ‘We will f*** your family, we will kill you,’” emphasizes Natalija Jakovljević from Magločistač for ANEM.

She adds that everything has been reported to the authorities, but with no outcome.

“Such messages will not scare us or force us to give up our journalistic work; they are simply disgusting, illiterate, and come at a time when we are facing a migrant crisis or student and civic protests. Those who read us know that our media has been covering these events in Subotica from the very beginning, and we strive to convey everything we encounter in the field,” Jakovljević assesses.

According to her, journalists must not remain silent about threats.

ANEM reminds that in recent months, the safety of journalists in Serbia has been further endangered, with an increase in threats, pressures, and attacks on female and male journalists who professionally carry out their work.

Magločistač is one example of professional local media that engages in quality journalism and topics of public interest.

We call on the relevant authorities to respond without delay, identify, and sanction all individuals who threaten the safety of female and male journalists and obstruct their work.

The project "System for Violence Prevention and Protection of Journalists" is being implemented by ANEM in partnership with Insider TV and the Center for the Development of Local Media, with the support of the European Union and the Balkan Fund for Democracy.
