Marija Šehić after her dismissal from TV Euronews Serbia: A journalist is solely accountable to the public.

Journalist Marija Šehić was unjustly dismissed yesterday from TV Euronews Serbia, owned by Telekom Srbija. This termination is a form of retaliation for opposing the violation of professional standards, pressures, and harassment of journalists at this media outlet since Minja Miletić, the regional director, and Dragana Pejović, the editor-in-chief, took over leadership positions, announced the Coalition for Media Freedom.

Marija Šehić after her dismissal from TV Euronews Serbia: A journalist is solely accountable to the public.

Journalist Marija Šehić has formally been dismissed by her employer, Arena News Channels DOO Belgrade, for “negligently or carelessly performing her job duties” and “violating work discipline.” The real reason is her months-long struggle, along with her colleagues from the editorial team, for decent journalism and the right to dignified work, reports Koalicija.

“This became particularly evident to the public when over 80 journalists and media workers from this outlet issued a statement distancing themselves from the article ‘We call on the authorities to enable RTS to operate’ published on April 18 in the name of the editorial board, without her knowledge. The signatories, including Marija Šehić, thus opposed the leading ‘duo’ without whose consent such a text could not have been published,” it is stated.

“A journalist, regardless of which outlet they work for, is solely responsible to the public,” says Marija Šehić in a statement for Danas.

“My colleagues and I have endeavored to adhere to that principle and defend the profession, to abide by the Law and the Code. I regret that the management of Euronews does not recognize that value, but at the same time, I am honored to have worked in the editorial team where I was until yesterday, alongside colleagues who share the same values and uphold the same principles,” Šehić explains, adding: “I wish them strength to continue.”
