MFRR calls on Vučić to cease attacks on journalists and for the EU to respond more decisively.
MFRR condemns the recent public accusation by President Vučić, who referred to the reporting of television stations Nova S and N1 as "pure terrorism." Our organizations, which recently conducted a media freedom mission in Serbia, urge the president to immediately cease the use of such dangerous rhetoric against the media.
His comments represent a serious escalation of verbal attacks and pressure on independent media by political leaders amid ongoing student protests. Journalists reporting from the streets continue to face physical assaults, including violence from the police. Media freedom in Serbia is at its lowest level in decades and continues to decline at an alarming rate.
Although the EU has condemned all forms of violence, called for the protection of the freedom of assembly, and emphasized that police actions must be proportional and in line with fundamental rights, it has yet to respond specifically to the concerning rise in violence against journalists. A stronger and more direct response is needed, including action from member states.
