Acquittal in the trial for the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Regarding the acquittal of the accused for participating in the organization of the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, the president of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) and the Commission for the Investigation of Journalist Murders in Serbia, Veran Matić, stated that he is outraged and disappointed.
“Every time those for whom there is compelling evidence are released, the enemies of freedom of speech and the media are given a green light to attempt to silence other journalists through murder, because there is a high probability that such a crime will go unpunished. This ruling, like the acquittal of the defendants in the murder of Slavko Ćuruvija in Serbia, who had previously been sentenced to a total of 100 years in prison in two first-instance trials, heralds increasingly difficult conditions for professional journalists around the world,” said Matić.
The court in Malta acquitted businessman Jorgen Fenech of charges of complicity in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a car bomb explosion in 2017.
Veran Matić called for solidarity with the families of murdered journalists, with journalists themselves, as well as for mutual support and collective pressure on governments and international organizations. “The fight for freedom, freedom of speech and expression, and freedom of the media must be a priority,” emphasized the president of ANEM.
