Guidelines for Ethical Reporting on Homelessness and Poverty

In media reporting on homelessness and poverty, we often encounter a distorted image – life on the streets as a consequence of personal tragedy, poor decisions, or a series of unfortunate circumstances. Homelessness and poverty are not individual problems, but rather complex social phenomena that arise at the intersection of economic, institutional, and social factors.

Since its founding in 2010, the Liceulice magazine has been bringing the experiences of people living on the margins of society closer to the public in accordance with the principles of ethical reporting, and this year we are sharing these principles with colleagues from other media outlets.

The Guidelines for Ethical Reporting on Homelessness and Poverty are intended for all editorial teams, media houses, journalists, and photojournalists who, in accordance with the Code of Journalists of Serbia, wish to report accurately, impartially, and comprehensively on the issues of homelessness and poverty in line with the public interest and the ethical principles of their profession.

The way we, as media, report on homelessness and poverty affects how we, as a society, understand these phenomena and how we relate to them. Irresponsible reporting can contribute to the strengthening of stereotypes and prejudices, dehumanization, and the shifting of responsibility from the system onto individuals.
