UNS: Authorities must find and penalize the person who is continuously threatening Veran Matić.
The Journalists' Association of Serbia (UNS) condemns the new threats directed at the President of the Management Board of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), Veran Matić, on the social media platforms X and Facebook, and once again calls on the authorities to urgently identify and punish those responsible.
As Matić confirmed to UNS, he submitted an addendum to the criminal complaint he filed on July 29 to the Prosecutor's Office for High-Tech Crime regarding the threats he received on the platform X, from the account “@glisha_m.”
A new threat was directed at Matić from the same account, once again below a clip from the show “Without Censorship” in which Matić was a guest.
"You are part of the hydra. We will eliminate the hydra!", is the comment from the user “@glisha_m” on X.
On the Facebook page from the account named Glišić Milenko, it was written: “You are part of the hydra just like the loyal Matić. WE WILL CRUSH YOU! You will end up like Afghan NGOs,” accompanied by a photo of Veran Matić.
“Afghan NGOs and those who worked for those organizations after the departure of U.S. military troops were lynched,” Matić reminded UNS.
As he emphasizes, while reviewing the accounts of the person threatening him, he recorded threats of violence and death against numerous journalists, analysts, judges, and politicians.
“A few days ago, I also wrote to the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and informed her that I again requested a security assessment from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia due to the numerous threats I am exposed to, as well as the campaigns being waged against me in tabloids,” said Matić.
He emphasizes that he received a response from her office stating that “it is very concerning that his journalistic work leads to attacks that make him worried for his safety.”
“We hope that all measures will be taken as soon as possible. The European Commission will continue to prioritize media freedom and freedom of expression in the accession process of each candidate country to the EU,” the response, which UNS was able to review, stated.
UNS once again calls on the authorities to take the threats against Veran Matić seriously, particularly considering that this is just one in a series of threats he has faced, and that these threats are recurring.
UNS reminds that during the airing of Insider on B92 television, Matić and the author of this show, Brankica Stanković, were granted police protection, as it was assessed that their safety was at risk.
