"Press Don't Shoot 12: The Spiral of Violence, Attacks During Local Elections, and the Mental Health of the Profession"

Media freedom in Serbia today resembles a bird in a cage: attacks, threats, and censorship come from politically powerful structures, while the key to the cage is held by those who are supposed to ensure security.

"Press Don't Shoot 12: The Spiral of Violence, Attacks During Local Elections, and the Mental Health of the Profession"

In the past year, the crisis has deepened, and journalists are trapped in a spiral of violence. Following the deadly collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, 294 violations of media freedom were documented, targeting 513 journalists and media outlets.

The state shows no willingness to respond. The police and authorities do not acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. European missions, which recently spent two days in Belgrade, warn that the chances of violence escalating are dangerously high. And while the cage remains locked, journalists continue to work and do everything to ensure that true and complete information reaches the citizens. That constitutional right has not been revoked.

In this country, a journalist has been killed, and it was suspected that his executors were being paid from the budget to ensure security. There has been no conviction. Therefore, in today’s situation, any talk of “security” sounds like bitter irony.
