The ring around critical media is tightening in a year that, by all accounts, will also be an election year.
From stripped-down police force to invisible bots – the arsenal for attacks is becoming increasingly rich. At the center is the endangered right that should be guaranteed without exception to every citizen of Serbia – the right to freedom of thought and expression.
The past year has been marked as one of the most dangerous for journalists, even though attacks on independent media in Serbia have persisted, with breaks, for almost four decades.
Serbia is a country where no one is held accountable for the murders of journalists, and that is a message we hear loud and clear. But we still have questions, and also a clear intention to ask them, to communicate the truth no matter how painful it may be for anyone.
Almost every day, journalist associations raise the alarm and warn of new attacks on journalists, on freedom of expression, and the state of the media in Serbia.
In January, just as the new political year began to heat up, synchronized and stronger-than-ever online bot attacks on the social media of media outlets, organizations, and individuals commenced. What all those who were attacked have in common is that they are critically oriented towards the current government.
