Veran Matić: The threats received by female journalists are incomparably more frightening than those received by male journalists.
"The threats that female journalists receive in the online space are incomparably more terrifying than those received by male journalists," said Veran Matić, president of the Board of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) and member of the Permanent Working Group for the Safety of Journalists, in an interview with Nova S television.

He added that the mere threat of being killed is no longer perceived as the most serious threat when it comes to female journalists.
"Threats of rape and extremely pathological ways of dealing with female journalists are much more frightening than those that threaten their lives," Matić stated.
The research "Mass Discrimination of Media Workers in Serbia," which is part of a regional study conducted in Serbia by the United Trade Union of Independence – Trade Union of Culture, Arts, and Media, shows that every second female journalist has experienced sexual harassment. The offenders are 50% colleagues and 30% superiors.
"Female journalists very rarely report disturbing situations because they lack trust in institutions that have not responded to such situations in the past, nor in the management of their companies. They fear the consequences they may face if they report, especially since it has been shown that they are further harassed even within the police," Matić noted.
