The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) strongly condemns the inappropriate message about cartoonist Dušan Petričić that was posted by activist and member of the Management Board of Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS) Predrag Azdejković on the social network X.

Journalist Srđan Nonić received two disturbing messages containing threats and insults from the profile "Sale" via the Facebook page "Niška inicijativa." The messages read: "You are a stinking guy. You should be hanged! Stinker Stinky."

Although he was shot by the Security Service on Easter 1999, during the bombing, the unresolved murder of Slavko Ćuruvija continues to painfully seek answers to a number of questions. Until 2014, the investigation was obstructed precisely by members of that service, which, in addition to journalists, also killed former President of Serbia Ivan Stambolić, Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, and many others.

More than 600 calls were received through the Journalists' Safe Line 0800 100 115 in 2025, announced the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), on the occasion of the International Day of SOS Telephones, which is celebrated worldwide every May 16.

Through strong media networking, we can protect each other and also bring about significant social changes. This was already the case during the 1990s when the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) served as the backbone for change. It is important to take a step towards empowering the media scene in Serbia and demonstrating collective strength and influence, emphasized Veran Matić, President of the Board of ANEM, at the Association's Annual Assembly held in Belgrade.

While carrying out journalistic duties, specifically covering the protests in Zaječar on October 11, 2025, the journalist from "Glas Zaječara," Miljko Stojanović, was obstructed by the Chief of the Zaječar Police Department, Igor Jevtić, and an officer from the traffic police unit of the same police department, Ivan Vidanović. During this incident, Stojanović was pushed, knocked to the ground, and his mobile phone – a work tool – was seized and smashed against the pavement. The journalist was also struck with shields on his body and physically pinned against the wall with considerable force.

The state of media freedom in Serbia on the International Day for its observance is best illustrated by our country's ranking in this year's global Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders.

Journalist and editor of Glas Zaječara, Miljko Stojanović, received a summons for questioning in the capacity of "defendant" on May 28, after the Police Administration of Zaječar submitted requests to the Misdemeanor Court in that city to initiate misdemeanor proceedings against him for violating the Law on Public Assembly.

Small and local independent media in Serbia face various types of pressures, threats, lawsuits, and a difficult economic situation on a daily basis. Media outlets, particularly at the local level, have limited access to advertising budgets, and due to critical and professional reporting, they increasingly fail to qualify for competitions for project co-financing of media content that are announced at the national, provincial, and local levels.
