In the Higher Court in Belgrade, a hearing was held today regarding the lawsuit filed by the owner of "Kurir," Igor Žeželj, against Cenzolovka due to a text in which former member of the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM), Judita Popović, stated that Žeželj had insulted her.

A hearing was held regarding the lawsuit filed by Igor Žeželj against Cenzolovka: Judita Popović testified.

Žeželj did not appear at the hearing because, as his attorney stated, he was on a business trip.

Judita Popović testified, describing an event from a public session of the REM Council that took place three years ago, during which candidates for national television frequencies, including "Kurir," presented their elaborates.

Popović stated that all candidates, including Kurir, presented their elaborates after which the members of the REM Council asked them questions.

“Žeželj said that they broadcast Russian programming at night because they do not have enough of their own. I did not read anything about that in the elaborate, so I asked him what kind of Russian program it was since the public has the right to know. At that moment, he quietly, almost whispered a curse. I was carefully watching and listening to him, and I saw and heard that he cursed at me. Perhaps he directed it at my question, but I took it as if he cursed me,” Popović described the event.

She also mentioned that the then-chairperson of the REM Council, Olivera Zekić, approached her with a comment that “it cannot just be left like that,” and that a REM employee from the so-called “deaf room” confirmed to her that a curse was heard.

“In the ‘deaf room,’ every spoken word is audible, and the employees' task was to monitor everything because we had technical problems with the microphones,” Popović explained, noting that the curse was not audible on the available recording of the session.

She reminded that a procedure is already underway against her based on Žeželj's lawsuit, in which a REM employee testified, confirming that the curse was spoken, while Olivera Zekić stated that she does not remember the event.

When asked by the attorney Slavko Ćuruvija from the Krune Savović Foundation whether journalists faithfully conveyed her words and impressions, Popović replied affirmatively: “I stand by every word I said. I conveyed to the journalists what I heard; it is known that I speak based on facts and do not present tabloid assumptions.” She added that Cenzolovka did not publish the actual curse to avoid tabloid publicity.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 2026, at which the author of the text, Tamara Spaić, and the editor-in-chief of Cenzolovka, Perica Gunjić, are to testify.
