Support those who ask in your name: How to help small and local independent media in Serbia?

The situation and conditions in which local media journalists in Serbia operate worsened further in 2025. The assessment provided by media representatives is 2.23 for the previous year, compared to the assessment of 2.53 a year earlier, as shown by the research “Indicators of the State of Local Media in Serbia for 2025: A Case Study of Eight Cities and Municipalities and One Region”, conducted by the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM).

As part of this research, media representatives assessed several areas, with the lowest rating of 1.87 concerning the economic position of journalists, which is a significant decline compared to 2024 when the same indicator was rated at 2.16.

Many of them therefore rely on support from citizens, or their audience. Citizens can support independent media in various ways, and 16 out of the 42 members of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) have ongoing open calls for support.

Quality reporting on public interest topics is of utmost importance for the development of media freedom and a democratic society, so it is crucial to stand by independent media as they are a voice that must not be silenced.
