The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) requests that, due to the scenes of violence broadcast on Pink television in recent evenings, the expert services of the Regulatory Authority determine violations of the Law on Electronic Media and that the Council of REM be urgently constituted in order to impose appropriate measures.

UNS: Unacceptable airing of violent scenes on Pink television.

In the reality show "Elita," which is broadcast on this television station with national coverage, scenes of violence have been shown multiple times, in which one of the participants physically attacks other participants, including his ex-wife.

UNS believes that the broadcast of these scenes constitutes a particularly serious violation of the Law on Electronic Media (ZEM), for which the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) is obliged to impose a temporary ban on the publication of the program content.

As stipulated by Article 40 of this Law, a particularly serious violation of the Law on Electronic Media includes, among other things, "content that disrespects the dignity of the individual, including the depiction of humiliating treatment, scenes of violence and torture," and "the depiction of scenes of brutal violence and other program content that could severely harm the physical, mental, or moral development of minors."

Furthermore, among the serious violations of ZEM, for which this regulatory body is obliged to issue a warning, is included "a violation of the obligations of the media service provider, committed through negligence, regarding the publication of program content that may harm the physical, moral, or mental development of minors."

Article 70 of ZEM stipulates that REM is responsible for ensuring respect for the dignity of individuals and human rights in all program content, and that humiliating treatment, "as well as scenes of torture and violence, should not be shown unless there is a programmatic and artistic justification for it."

UNS also reminds that, according to the recommendations of the Council of Europe on preventing and combating sexism and standards of gender equality, the media has an obligation to avoid depicting content that humiliates the dignity of individuals, normalizes violence, and can have a detrimental impact on the audience, especially minors.
